Hi! I love your sight. I just wanted to share a few memories from home. I grew up in Chapmanville, a little town nestled in the coal mining fields of WV. The best thing I remember about it is the hot summer days spent fishing the Guyandotte, watching baseball games, and being with friends. I moved to Tyler County when I was 13. My family bought a mountain top farm. You could see rolling hill upon rolling hill on that place. A fresh breeze constantly stirred. I can still remember the smell of fresh cut hay. I miss it. Thank you for the sight and sending me home if only just for a moment or two.

Wanda, Being a West Virginian, I too am very proud of our great state. Born and raised just outside of Weston, in Lewis County, I am more interested in WV history now than ever before. I live in the house my maternal Grandfather Claude Marion Matthews, built from wood sawed near Stumptown, WV and hauled to this location by horses and wagon. He was married to Ella Bonnett, Daughter of Henry Bonnett for over 50 Years, and lived in this house from their marriage until their deaths. In one of the old black hardback West Virginia history books, it stated that Pickle Street, (on U.S. 33 West of Weston) was named that, because the daughters of Henry Bonnett threw pickles (cucumbers) at the teamsters as they passed by. Those girls were the half-sisters of my Grandmother. Henry Bonnett was married twice and both wives had the same first and last (maiden) name, Sarah West.

Weston has its share of History including Jackson's Mill, boyhood home of "Stonewall Jackson," The worlds largest hand cut Stone building, namely the former Weston State Hospital, and the worlds tallest one story building which is The Citizens Bank of Weston. The original portion of this building is very beautiful both inside and out. It must be seen to appreciate it as words cannot do it justice. Thanks for letting me share a portion of my background.

Hello Wanda,

Just happened across your site, and after reading all the wonderful memories of fellow West Virginians, I just have to share my amazing part of West Virginia with you.

I dwell in the small rural community of Naugatuck, in Mingo County. Named after the Indian chief and Mingo tribe. My entire family on all sides of my genealogy have lived and died in Southern West Virginia. Unlike my family of school teachers, I made my living in the shadows of the coal mine, like so countless others of my mountain brother and sisters.

I stroll the back roads, and travel the ridges of my astonishing home daily.

Following my heart surgery last year, the doctors supposed the best advice for a full recovery was exercise. I walk 6 miles a day through my mountains. Who would have ever thought it would have taken my heart to show me the way back to my roots, "The Mountains of my Ancestors"

If you live here and don't take pleasure in the mountains, you'll never know what you missed, til their gone!!! Enjoy your mountain heritage!

I love your web site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My name is Wanda Lee also. I am from Logan and graduated in 1966 from Logan High.
Then it was off to Huntington to go to Victor Comptometer school. I lived in a boarding house with a lot of other girls , mostly from the school. It was on fifth steet and fifth avenue.
I remember going to the Burger Boy FoodaRama for hamburger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dated one of the managers there and he was and still is from Milton.
I then went to Columbus, Ohio and live there until 1984 when I moved to Florida. I am 53, married and work at Coca Cola in Tampa.

I have a lot of fond memories from living in Logan.
Halls Drug Store was my fondest memory. I would go there for the ham salad sandwiches! Oh, how I cried when my Mom called to tell me that it burned down, and they were not going to rebuild it. (That was a hundred years ago)
Also, going to the movies at one of the three or so movie houses right in town on a Sunday afternoon. Also, slaw dogs at Penneys Drive Inn or Stewarts.
Also, shopping in "town" when there were three dime stores. Also, the Mercantile, Maydays and oh my!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The cream horns at the New Era bakery.

Thank you soooooooo much for the memories.

Hi Wanda,
I sure do have alot of wonderful W.VA memories in my heart and mind. I can't begin to put any certain one as the best. My mind often goes back to Iaeger where my dad was born and raised. Hanover, where I lived as a young girl, being raised in a house that my mom was born in. Crum, where I spent many many good times with family there. I find myself now being almost 500 miles away from home, when I want to go home I can see and remember all the good times back home in West Virginia. Walking the country roads, driving up the holler. Sitting on the front porch in the summer evenings breaking green beans. And watching the fog settle in the hills. Drawing water from the well.

Thank God for all those memories, because no man can ever take those from me and whenever Iam lonely. I can go back, if only for a little while.

Sincerely,
Drema Arnold

Wanda,

I really did enjoy your website. Many beautiful pictures and I believe I have visited many of the sites. Wanted to pass on some WV memories that I have. This was actually printed in the Charleston Gazette a few years ago. It reflects true memories for me and my family. For the record, I'm from Ravenswood but work in Northern VA now.

Spring trips to the "mountains" from my hometown of Ravenswood started for me around the age 10 when dad would let me join the "men" for fishing trips in search of trout. While these trips would include many areas of the Monongahela National Forest, my favorite were those to the Cranberry Back Country.

My first "real catch" of a trout was from the Cranberry River. That particular morning, it was frosty in early April. We had headed up stream from the lower campground early so we could beat some of the crowd on that Saturday morning. Dad instructed me to sit on top of a rock right above a nice pool of water and fish that hole while he waded out to a large slanting rock to fish the other side of the stream. As luck would have it, I enticed a small brook trout of about 11 inches to take my bait. I was in heaven. As the day went on, the sun rose above the top of the surrounding mountains to warm the air. The outdoors was alive and Mother Nature was hard at work greening the country-side. God was gracing our presence.

I went on to catch 2 more trout that day. Great Day!!! Oh yes, dad caught a few trout as well. But, as I look back upon that day, dad knew it wasn't how many fish we caught. He wanted me to learn the importance of what I had experienced and why it mattered. Dad's plan was working.

As time went on, trips to the Cranberry took on many varieties of adventure. Some trips were designed to camp in a trailer at the campground while others were to stay a week in one of the shelters whereby we packed in all of our provisions for the week. No matter what the arrangement was, we were there to enjoy Cranberry.

We still make at least one annual trip to Cranberry in the fall. Last fall as we made our way to Dogway Fork, we all stopped to rest for a moment. Dad put it as I've heard him say many times before about Cranberry, "This truly is God's country".

These are my fond memories of West Virginia.

"My name is Maggie ( Copley) Spizzirri. My hometown was a little place called Lando Mines. I live in Virginia now, but God willing, I'll be going back someday."

"I've come to realize, after many years, what loving it is all about. If you're born there it seems as if it becomes part of you and you're never the same living anywhere else.
Some day all of us that left to find work will return and its going to be like the Isrealites returning to the Holy Land. God Blessed that State with a living Spirit. I can feel it and sense it when I'm there.
I remember when I was a young girl, I would sit and just take it all in around me and smell the air. It was as though I could feel something living all around me.
Since those younger days I've been around a little, but absolutely nothing matches it or the feeling I get just thinking about it.
West Virginia, maybe it was the original Garden of Eden."

"I enjoyed your true representation of our state.
I also am proud to be a Mountaineer.

Anecdote: Recently the Vice President of my Division was introducing the President and CEO of my company.

He was from Huntington, WV. When he said that he was from Huntingon (which I already knew) I stood to my feet and clapped and whistled in front of about 150 people. I was the only one who did it.

About 10 years prior to this the President and CEO was aboard a chartered bus with us.
As we crossed the state line at Wheeling, he rose to his feet and started singing, "Oh Those West Virginia hills, how majestic and how grand."
I joined in with him in front of all those people.

We let them all know we were proud to be from WV."

"Makes me homesick to see all beautiful photo's of my home land.

I dream of all the beauty of W.VA. Tree's in the Fall of the year, spring time flowers, summer sun and fun.

Born and raised on Rt#3 at Montcoal, Raleigh County, I moved to N.C. for weather and retirement. But I’ll be laid to rest in them there mountains.

Sweet peace and beauty beyond compare. God’s country! He sure blessed us good with such beauty. West Virginians should keep it up, as it is our home.

I am very proud of our home state. And it is so sad that we don’t uplift our home land more. Keep it clean, The beauty is already there.

I long to go back. My heart is in West Virginia. And I might add, that my husband went there from Bowling Green, KY. That's where we met, and lived, lived until his retirement from the coal mine's at Montcoal. He fell in "love" with W.VA. before he fell in love with me.

I have "rocks" in my flower garden from home up in Pineknob, W.VA. I love my rocks also. So ever time I’m out working, or just admiring my flowers, I have a part of W.VA. here. Even our rocks are pretty.

May God bless you in what ever you do. Thank you for caring about W.VA."

"Hi, I was born in War, W.Va. A tiny little town.

We moved to Ohio in 1950 when I was ten, but I still remember the beautiful mountains.

My older sisters and brothers went to Big Creek High School.

All of us, at one time or another, played in the mountains and caves that surrounded us.

I have lived in several states since then, including Ca. and Nev. and I still think the country roads of W. Va are beautiful.

But I must admit I am scared to death of mountain drop off roads.

I enjoyed your pictures of the country roads."

Hello Wanda,
Just found your site. Great job. You know we take the small things for granted sometimes. It took me a while to grow-up but when I did I realized how fortunate I am. Truly blessed by god. I wake up to fresh smelling flowers, warm sun, the taste of ripened tomatoes from the garden, the sound of the creek and at night the sound of whippoorwills and crickets. I almost hate to go to work, but when I'm home you can count on me being outside with my two kids teaching them how to have fun the W.VA. way. They don't know it yet, but W.VA. is seeping through their veins. They too will realize it when they grow-up. How's that for a family tradition? If anyone's not from W.VA., that's ok, just pull up a chair on the porch, no need to call first, just come on down.
God bless!!!!!!

"Wanda, I want to say thank you for sharing that story about Huntington with me. Brings back a lot of good memories. I also have some wonderful memories of growing up in Huntington. I was born and raised on the west end of Huntington. Growing up in Huntington in the 70's and 80's was so great. I went to school Jefferson Elementary, and West Jr. High School, we moved before I got into high school. As a kid, my sister, some friends, and me would ride the bus uptown to Keith-Albee. We also went to the new Huntington library and looked at books. We always took enough money along to eat at the dime store. We always went to the Olympic Pool, and like you, we went to ride sleds and inner tubes at Gobbler's Knob. Boy wasn’t that just the greatest days of our lives growing up?"

Hi Wanda,
My name is George Conner, I was born and raised in the small town of Newhall, West Virginia. Though I have lived in San Antonio, Texas for the past 26 years, my heart still belongs to the hills of West Virginia. I have a lot of wonderful memories of Southern West virginia. As a kid I hunted, fished and played in the mountains around the towns there. I went to school at Newhall, then to Berwind Junior High School and graduated from Big Creek High School in War, WV in 1955. I have a few pictures that were just made last August, if you would care to see them. You have a very beautiful site. I haven't gone through the whole thing yet but the parts that I have seen are very nice. A friend from Florida sent it to me tonight.

I truly have some great memories of that state. I have family in Beckley, Fayetteville, Powellton, just about everywhere in that state. It makes me homesick.I do have to disagree with the hot dogs though--even though Stewarts hot dogs are great---Morrisons(where my Aunt Sally works---the oldest living curb girl!!) and the old junction in Man are the best anywhere in the world!! When I was a child(I am 51) we lived out on 16th street when it was still a good neighborhood. I went to Meadows school. We were only there for a few years then we went back home to Man. I love wv. even though we live in Arkansas now but we go home every time for my high school reunion. Keep up the good work.I love the pictures and our beautiful West Virginia Mountains.. God Bless.

I was born and lived l8 years in Welch and the drive on those mountain roads is always a joy to me.
